FUZING SYSTEM FOR XSAM-N-4, GUIDED MISSILE DOVE; TESTING OF
Abstract
Drop tests were run on the XB-44A tail fuzing system to determine (1) the arming time, (2) safety on accidental release, and (3) reliability on water impact. The XB-44A fuze is armed by a motor which is driven by the same rotor generator that supplies power to the homing system. After 12 turns the shaft is withdrawn to permit the fuze rotor to turn 90 deg and align the detonators and to unlock the inertia strikers which actuate the primers on impact. A smoke-puff system actuated by a switch to be closed by the arming system was installed for determining the arming time. The 4.1 to 4.9-sec arming time was too short. None of the 3 fuzes in inert bombs dropped from 100 ft onto concrete targets armed; the fuze safety on accidental release was considered satisfactory. A 290- to 350-msec impact delay of bombs dropped from 8000 ft onto water exceeded the 250- msec design delay and indicated satisfactory operation in water impacts. (See also AD7646).
