DEVELOPMENT OF A LIQUID ANNULAR RING TYPE OF AIR COMPRESSOR

Abstract

An initial 6-compartment model with straight, radial, 1/16-in.-thick blades having rounded edges and a partial wedge-shaped bronze bearing had a maximum efficiency of 63% at 3100 rpm and delivered 36.7 cu ft/min of free air at 6 psig. A second model featuring ball-bearing rotor supports, greater blade immersion, 9 compartments, increased discharge- and intake-port lapping, and greater eccentricity-to-diameter ratio delivered 73 cu ft/min at 7 psi with a 65% efficiency at 2600 rpm, the capacity of the 3-hp dc driving motor. A test setup with a 5-hp dc motor and a transmission dynamometer for more accurate input measurements is described for more detailed testing. (See also AD-6040)
