INVESTIGATION OF ENGINE OPERATIONAL DEFICIENCIES IN THE F-86E AIRPLANE
Abstract
Flight tests conducted to investigate reported unsatisfactory engine operation in the F-86E airplane disclosed that erratic fuel regulation was caused by deficiencies in the oil system. Further investigation of high oil consumption and inadequate scavenging indicated that recognized lubrication system problems can become critical on the F-86E airplane because of its smaller oil tank. The blowouts encountered with the first faulty engine were caused by the altitude fuel schedule being higher than the maximum limit. The power loss problem encountered on the second engine was caused by the pumping of air into the fuel regulator case because of a deficiency in the oil system.
