(SYNTHESIS AND STUDY OF SEVERAL RARE EARTH ALUMINATES) TECHNICAL REPT. NO. 1, JULY 1, 1953

Abstract

The synthesis and properties of several rare earth aluminates were investigated. Single crystals of LaAlO3, CeAlO3, and NdAlO3 were grown using the Verneuil technique (flame fusion). Substitution of Ce and Nd for La distributed the cubic nature of the latter aluminate and produced tetragonal structures retaining the perosvskite form. The molar volume of the aluminates decreased upon substituting Ce for La or Nd for Ce. Density, refractive index, and melting point of the crystals increased with increasing atomic number of the rare earth ion. The thermal expansion of CeAlO3 appeared to display a second-order transition. Spectral transmittance curves of the rare earth aluminates possessed, in varying degree, the fine structures typical of rare earth spectra. The electrical data indicated that the compounds were not ferroelectric. The variation in the dielectric loss factor in the crystals appeared to be associated with conductivity.
