Abstract

Research is reported on projects to determine (1) spectral characteristics of wet and dry snow from 0 deg to -60 deg C, (2) radiant characteristics of paints and materials which might be used in arctic conditions, and (3) criteria for arctic identification and camouflage materials. Descriptions and discussions are included of instruments being used or designed and techniques for measuring reflectances and reflectinities of materials. These include a heated-cavity reflectometer, a paraboloid reflectometer design, a 2- radiometer technique for measurements at or near ambient temperatures, a portable field emissivity meter, and a solarimeter and albedometer for measuring the transmission and albedo of snow to solar radiation. Reflectivity curves (1 to 15 microns) are included for polished Phosphor Bronze; Kovar; polished Mo, Zn, Cu, Ni, and Al; commercial-finish Al; roughened, polished Al; Al foil; flat black paint on polished Al; VNCH-coated (Bakelite Corp) Al foil; galvanized Fe; black Bakelite; Tophet-A Nichrome ribbon; black, red, and clear Glyptal; red and clear Pedigree; MgO and TiO2 on polished Al and on a flat, black coating on Al; and flat white paint on polished Al.
