ANODES FOR PREPARATION OF ALKALI PERCHLORATES

Abstract

An attempt was made to find a material to replace Pt as the anode in the industrial preparation of Na ClO4 from Na ClO3 by electrolysis. Preliminary experiments were conducted on silicides of Mo and Ti and magnetites embodying TiO2 and CuO. Process tests were run on specimens of 70% dense Cr, 77% dense Cr, W carbide, Smith alloy, Ta, nimonic alloy, inconel alloy, Ti carbide, and TiO. An investigation was made of the effect of superimposition of alternating current circuit including the NaClO3 electrolyte. A series of experiments were carried out using surface treated steels as perchlorate anodes. Theoretical considerations relevant to the perchlorate anode problem were explored.
