MAGNETO-IONIC CALCULATIONS

Abstract

Values of the index of refraction, absorption index, and complex polarization vector are tabulated for 25- to 500-kc radio waves being propagated in absorbing ionized medium in the presence of an external magnetic field. The calculations were made on OARAC, a 10-digit fixed automatic-sequencing digital computer. The complete computations consist of 2 parts: (1) calculations at ten frequencies of about 30 values of collision frequency and 35 values of electron density; and (2) calculations for 150 kc, using 10 values of collision frequency and 11 values of electron density repeated for 3 values of gyro-magnetic frequency and 3 values of dip angle. All parameters in both calculations were varied separately. The calculations were based on the Appleton-Hartree formula and the procedure given by Bailey (Phil. Mag. 26:425-453, 1938). Parameters were chosen on the basis of the anticipated behavior of the calculations and of the signal in the atmosphere.
