X-Ray Crystallographic Studies of Beryllium Boride and the Alleged Copper Boride.

Abstract

Beryllium boride was prepared, and its crystal structure was studied. The structure of Be8Be5 was considered to be a compromise between a tendency for Be to adopt the fluorite arrangement and the tendency for B to form some sort of network containing B-B bonds. Be8B5 in contrast to Be8B4 had almost an identical number of valence electrons per unit cell as Be8C4. Attempts were made to prepare Cu boride; however, analysis indicated that the preparations were actually Cu2Si, possibly containing a small amount of B. The source of Si was the porcelain crucible.
