ANALYSIS OF THE TAFT ACCELEROGRAM OF THE EARTHQUAKE OF 21 JULY 1952
Abstract
Spectra are presented as computed from accelerograms recorded at Taft, California of the July 21, 1952 earthquake in the region of Arvin and Tehachapi, California. Graphs are included of the ground motion generated by the detonation of 370,000 lb of buried explosives as recorded at about 1000 ft from the detonation point. The maximum acceleration recorded on the floor of the subbasement of a steel-frame mill building was 8% of gravity. This motion excited the building into vibration which was measured on a concrete floor slab 45 2/3 ft above the ground floor. The maximum horizontal acceleration of the floor slab was 10.5% of gravity. The natural vibration of the building was about 1/3 sec. Curves are presented which illustrate the maximum acceleration of the building for various periods of vibration and various values of damping. These graphs are considered to characterize the effect of the ground motion on different structures and are believed to be applicable to other buildings.
