STIMULATION OF ERYTHROPOIESIS IN NORMAL ADULT RATS BY A NON-PROTEIN EXTRACT OF PLASMA OF ANEMIC RABBITS

Abstract

A protein-free plasma extract from anemic rabbits was injected into healthy young rats. The resulting increased hemoglobin and hematocrit volume indicated the presence of an erythropoietic factor in the plasma filtrate. The response was markedly similar to that induced by hypoxia. Blood volume measurements did not indicate a hemoconcentration explanation.
