DEVELOPMENT AND FIELD TESTS OF A SAMPLER FOR SUSPENDED SEDIMENT IN WAVE ACTION

Abstract

A device was designed on the basis of laboratory tests to gather sediment samples by pumping sediment-laden water from a selected point. The sampler consisted of a 0.5-in, intake nozzle, filter case, filter core, check valve, submersible pump, standard pipe tee and plug, and water meter. Field tests at Crystal Pier, California were conducted on 23 days; 290 samples were obtained. These tests indicated that the number of acceptable samples procurable with the sampler depends on local conditions. Only 71% of the samples were of use for data evaluation. Tabulated data are included for sediment concentrations in individual samples taken landward of the breaker line and are grouped by classes of wave heights, water depths, and sampling elevations from the bottom. A reasonable logical correlations between suspended sediment concentration, water depth, and wave height is believed possible were not of a high degree of accuracy, but they were considered to indicate that the total suspended-material movement can be an important factor in a littoral-drift analysis.
