STUDY OF THE FUNDAMENTALS OF COMBUSTION
Abstract
The burning velocities of the CH4-O-N system were investigated for 6 mixtures having constant theoretical adiabatic flame temperatures of 2000 deg K at 1 atm and O to CH4 ratios from 0.78:1.) to 5.0:1.0. The data were obtained on flow nozzle burners which were adjusted to produce a flat flame above the nozzle opening. The velocity of the unburned gas through the nozzle was then the burning velocity of the gas mixture. The burning velocities found by this method were higher than those reported with the tube burner. This increase in velocity was apparently caused by a decrease in the quenching effect of the surrounding air. The composition of a series of CH4-O-N mixtures having theoretical adiabatic flame temperatures of 2250 deg K at 1 atm pressure are reported as well as well as the composition of several CH4-O-A mixtures having a theoretical adiabatic flame temperature of 2000 deg K 1 atm.
