AN ENGINEERING ANALYSIS OF CARGO HANDLING

Abstract

Attempts were made to systematize the complexities of cargo handling and find the relation between the existing variables. The steps necessary to determine these relations are outlined. They include a study of the background of cargo handling, a definition of the system, a formal analysis of it, and observations of actual cargo-handling operations. It is shown how specific cargo handling problems are solved after the relations between the variables have been determined. A description is given of the techniques used in obtaining data and the conceptual models that were developed to aid in the research. A bibliography of cargo handling is included, as well as a list of references to literature in such related fields as materials handling, motion study, statistics, operations analysis, network analysis, logistics, transportation, economics, and labor relations.
