EFFECT OF ORDER IN AN ARGUMENTATIVE SPEECH

Abstract

Two 20-min speeches, (1) Defer marriage until your military service is completed and (2) The 18-yr old should be allowed to vote , were tape- recorded and were spliced in anticlimax and climax order. Large, medium, and small arguments were anticlimax order; small medium, and large propositions were the climax order. Subjects who heard climax order were paired with those who heard anticlimax order on initial attitude and college grade average. Attitude was numerically indicated on a 5-point scale. In both studies, the presentations resulted in an attitude shift. The only difference in comparative effectiveness occurred in study (2), where the climax order showed a greater attitude shift on the main proposition. The anticlimax order showed better retention of the small argument. No significant difference of convincingness ratings appeared in either study.
