THE REACTION OF POTASSIUM WITH ALUMINUM(III) IODIDE IN LIQUID AMMONIA SOLUTION
Abstract
Al I3 was ammoniated and the product reacted with K. A step-by-step description of the reaction is presented up to and past the apparent end point (16 experiments were performed to determine the apparent end point). Data were obtained from the analysis of the solid product and filtrate. Experiments were performed on the effects of prolonged contact with liquid NH3 upon Al I3 and the insoluble ammonobasic iodide. Evidence was found for ammonolysis by experimentation with acid-base indicators. Tests for reducing power indicated a lack of stable compounds containing a lower oxidation state of Al. Experiments were also performed using KNH2 instead of K metal, and the results compared. A discussion of the results is included along with a survey of earlier work.
