Mechanics of Granular Media

Abstract

For a number of years, there has been under development a mathematical theory of the mechanical behavior of materials composed of discrete elastic grains in direct contact. Eventually, the theory is intended to predict stress-strain relations, stress distributions, vibrations, wave propagation phenomena and criteria of failure for such materials as are found in a bed of dry sand or the pile of grains in the carbon microphone.
