F-101A Phase II. Flight Evaluation

Abstract

The F-101A is potentially a good multi-purpose fighter. It is unacceptable for service use at the present time because of comparatively poor high altitude performance, restricted maneuverability due to engine compressor stalls under accelerated flight maneuvers, and lateral control sensitivity. The rate of climb, level flight speed and ability to accelerate in level flight are good but the 49,200-foot service ceiling is poor in comparison with USAF fighter aircraft in operational use. The range capabilities with the present bleed valve schedule are 15% less than predicted values.
