SERVICE STRESSES AND MOTIONS OF THE ESSO ASHEVILLE, A T-2 TANKER, INCLUDING A STATISTICAL ANALYSIS OF EXPERIMENTAL DATA.
Abstract
Stresses amidships as well as pitching and heaving accelerations were measured on the T-2 tanker ESSO ASHEVILLE during the vessel's normal commercial operations over the period 24 August 1952 to 3 April 1954. The data were obtained automatically, using a sampling procedure, and are analyzed by statistical methods. Analysis indicates that the dynamic stress variations associated with the ship's motion in waves will rarely exceed 12,000 psi peak-to-peak. Also, the stress variations due to changes in temperature distribution occasionally are of the same order of magnitude as those due to changes in dead-load distribution. The maximum measured stress variation (free of stress concentration) corresponding to changes in temperature was about 11,000 psi. The occurrence of wave-induced service stresses and of the ship motions experienced by the ESSO ASHEVILLE may be approximated by a logarithmically normal distribution. Expected extreme wave-induced stresses are predicted by use of the methods of statistics. (DTMB abstract) (See also AD-75 846, AD-76 239).
