THE TWISTED SPHERE,
Abstract
An analysis is made of the closed form of the fields of displacements and stresses within an elastic sphere twisted by 2 equal and opposite torsional moments applied at 2 diametrically opposite surface points. With the exception of these 2 points, the surface of the sphere is free from surface traction. Five different systems of coordinates are used to execute the mathematical processes and to represent the pertinent results in a form not obscured by an awkward selection of coordinates. All of the systems are totationally symmetric about the z-axis which lies along the diameter connecting the 2 points at which torsional moments are applied. The analytical approach is that of the theory of torsion of solids of revolution as stated by I. S. Sokolnikoff (Mathematical Theory of Elasticity, p. 205-208, McGraw-Hill, 1946) or by S. Timoshenko and J. N. Goodier (Theory of Elasticity, p. 304-309, McGraw-Hill, 1951).
