Free Oscillations of the Earth

Abstract

A systematic study is made of the free oscillations of the earth. Three methods of approach are followed. In the first, the periods of oscillation of a uniform earth possessing the average properties of the real earth (the 'average model') are investigated. The periods are then determined for the real earth by the use of a variational method, and third, an exact solution is obtained for the real earth by integrating the differential equations numerically on the electronic computer (WEIZAC).
