Low Speed Wind Tunnel Test of 12 Ft. and 14 Ft. Diameter Rotochutes

Abstract

Fixed blade pitch angle operation to determine governor characteristics requires special precautions to avoid rotor overspeeding in the critical angle range. A governor spring with a spring rate of 1100 pounds per inch and a preload of 550 pounds provides satisfactory governing action with the 12-foot SK22242-11 blades. Shifts in the location of the chordwise center of gravity of the blades affects the governor action in the same manner as changes in the governor sprint constants. A forward shift in the center of gravity corresponds to an increase in preload on the governor spring. The blade stresses during the test runs were considerably less than the ultimate strength of the blades and were directly proportional to rotor speed. During these tests, yawed operation with angles of yaw up to 10 deg had no appreciable effect upon blade vibratory stresses. Clearances in the synchronizer linkages allowed the coning angle to compensate for the angle of yaw.
