ON COHERENCE REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERFEROMETRY,

Abstract

A unified first order discussion of spectral and source geometry coherence requirements in a general double beam interferometer is presented. Familiar characteristics common to various types of interferometers are seen to emerge easily, as do some which are not as widely observed. The coherence properties of the general interferometer are shown to be contained in three vectors, two scalars and one tensor. Preferred experimental arrangements for given properties are suggested and examples are cited to lend substance to these concepts. Discrepancies in a recent published attemp at a similar treatment are pointed out. Finally, the relation between double beam interference and the correlation function and spectral energy of a stationary series of pulses is clarified. (Author)
