Coating for Lightning Protection of Structural Reinforced Plastics.

Abstract

The patent application concerns a closely woven thin wire fabric material as an electrically conductive coating for lightning protection of an electrically conductive fiber reinforced plastic panel used in aerospace vehicles. The fiber array of boron, graphite or other conductive or semiconductive structural reinforcement appears as a good path for lightning discharge currents either direct or induced and may share enough of these currents to cause structural damage to the panel. However, there is little or no structural damage to the composite panel and the damage becomes limited to the surface coating only.
