Liquid Cooled Runway.

Abstract

The patent application relates to a ground launch facility for spacecraft including a concrete runway with two water reservoir ponds each situated along the runway on either side. A series of high pressure pumping stations with a line of high pressure spray heads are positioned along the length of the runway at predetermined intervals. Means are provided for automatically initiating the flood of water on the runway as the vehicle passes and for maintaining the flow until sensors indicate that temperatures have returned to non-destructive levels after which the excess water is drained back to the ponds.
