STUDY OF EFFECTS AND CONTROL OF SURFACE CONTAMINANTS ON ELECTRICAL MATERIALS
Abstract
In previous work it was found that high resistance at relay contacts can be caused by surface insulating films or deposits. They may be organic, arising from outgassing of plastic insulating materials, or they may be inorganic, coming from residues of cleaning operations or from metal transfer during the fabrication of the contact and its incorporation into a relay. Contaminbation of this kind may be detected by the probe method, which consists of a measurement of the resistance between the metal contact and a 2-mil platinum wire, which is used as the probe. Accomplishments during the present report period were improvement of the probe method: investigation of contact cleaning by ultrasonics, dry honing, and chemical etching, study of metal transfer to contact surfaces from external sources, and study of Teflon outgassing.
