STUDY EXPLOSIVE CHARACTERISTICS OF ALIPHATIC NITRAMINES OF LOW CARBON CONTENT.
Abstract
Four aliphatic nitramines have been prepared and studied as to their essential chemical and explosive properties. These were selected for study because their relatively low carbon content and high oxygen and nitrogen content were considered favorable from the standpoint of reducing the smoke produced by flashless propellants in which they might be used as ingredients if their other characteristics were acceptable. Nitrourethane, dimethylinitramine, and cyclotrimethylenetri- nitrosamine have been found to have characteristics which render them unsuitable for use in propellant compositions. Dinitrodiacetylmethy- lenediamine has been found to be of excellent stability and to have favorable sensitivity and brisance. Although relatively insoluble in ether-alcohol and without gelatinizing action on nitrocellulose it is not soluble in or hydrolyzed by water and is not volatile or hygroscopic. As it appears to offer promise for such use, tests will be made to determine the practicability of using it as an ingredient of flashless propellant compositions. (Author)
