Development of Unconventional Ship Types with Emphasis on Maximum Capabilities for the Rapid Discharge of Cargo in Amphibious Operations.
Abstract
This study is concerned with the development of unconventional ship types with emphasis on maximum capability for the rapid discharge of cargo in amphibious operations. Four systems or cargo handling are considered: (1) a dry-delivery system, using conventional or modified transfer techniques for delivery from ship to shore at the assault area; (2) a wet-delivery system, employing the inherent floatable density characteristics of most amphibious cargo for developing rapid delivery by direct discharge from the ship into the water, while the ships are moving, with final transfer to beach by supplemental craft; (3) a sub-surface delivery system whereby cargo is discharged and cached in submerged condition until required for use; and (4) an aerial-delivery system.
