STUDY OF EFFECTS AND CONTROL OF SURFACE CONTAMINANTS ON ELECTRICAL MATERIALS

Abstract

Contact failure in hermetically sealed relays has been studied by physical and chemical analysis of failed contacts, gas analysis of relay enclosures and insulator outgassing, and controlled laboratory experiments on synthetic contacts. The studies yielded information of value in preventing contact failures by serving, to some extent, as a guide in the selection of contact materials, insulating materials, and contamination test methods.
