Use of Closed Bomb Test Methods for Assessing 81 mm Mortar Propellant

Abstract

The results obtained from 320 closed bomb firings and 280 proof firings of test samples representing 14 production lots of M5 increment propellant for the 81 mm mortar indicate a high degree of correlation, as shown by the statistical "H" test. On the basis of these results, equations relating flight velocities and mortar tube pressures to closed bomb parameters are derived. With these equations, velocities and pressures for the 81 mm mortar can be predicted within + or - 2.3% and + or - 4.9%, respectively.
