LINE WIDTHS OF PRESSURE BROADENED SPECTRAL LINES

Abstract

THE METHOD OF CALCULATING THE WIDTH OF PRESSURE-BROADENED SPECTRAL LINES BY USING THE IMPACT THEORY OF P. W. ANDERSON(PHYS. REV. 76: 647, 1949) IS OUTLINED IN CONSIDERABLE DETAIL. THE GENERAL QUANTUM MECHANICALRESULT IS DERIVED, THE ADIABATIC APPROXIMATIONS ARE DISCUSSED, AND ANDERSON S THEORY IS ESSENTIALLY REPEATED WITH SOME SLIGHT CHANGES. SEVERAL CASES OF MOLECULAR INTERACTIONS ARE TREATED. THE CALCULATIONS ARE EXTENDED TO INCLUDE THE EFFECT OF THE NONRESONANT TERMS OF THE INTERACTION MATRIX WHICH ARE NEGLECTED IN ANDERSON S WORK
