Abstract

943800Westinghouse Electric Corp., Elmira, N. Y. SCAN-CONVERSION STORAGE TUBE BASED UPON THE PERMACHON, by W. S. Rial. Quarterly progress rept. no. 1, 1 July-30 Sep 60. 21p. incl. illus. (Contract DA 36-039-sc-85051) Unclassified report DESCRIPTORS: *082 3057000Image tubes, *082 5933000Storage tubes, *082 3056000Image converter tubes, 247 4561000Photoconductivity, 082 1997000Electron tubes, 292 1679000Design, Open-ended Terms: Permachon. Efforts are being made to establish feasibility and demonstrate models of an electrical-input electrical-output scan-conversion storage tube based upon a photoconductive readout target similar in principal to that used in the Westinghouse Electric Corporation's Permachon storage tube. Seven experimental tubes of the first version were started, 3 of which were completed through (over) tip-off while maintaining the final vacuum. Two of these 3 tubes were operated in the preliminary PPI-to-TV rate conversion test equipment and feasibility was established for the design using a high velocity write gun, a low velocity read gun, a fiber optic radiation-transfer plate, a phosphor writing surface, and a Permachon type reading surface. Several severe mechanical limitations were discovered in this first tube version and a new mechanical assembly design was completed to overcome these faults. High resolution phosphors and cold gun sealing technique were also investigated. (Author)
