COMBUSTION OF ELEMENTAL BORON

Abstract

ADDITIONAL COMBUSTION EXPERIMENTS HAVE BEEN MADE ON BORON RODS BURNING CIGARETTE FASHION AT HIGH TEMPERATURES. RATES OF SELF-PROPAGATING COMBUSTION OF BORON HAVE BEEN DETERMINED IN OXYGEN AT PRESSURES AROUND 0.04 ATM AND AT BORON TEMPERATURES NEAR 2300 5. COMBUSTION-RATE DATA WERE ALSO OBTAINED AT 1-ATM PRESSURE IN A MIXTURE OF 97( OXYGEN AND 3( WATER VAPOR. OTHER BURNING EXPERIMENTS WERE CARRIED OUT WITH ELECTRICALLY HEATED BORON RODS AT BORON TEMPERATURES RANGING FROM APPROXIMATELY 1000TO 2300 K IN PURE WATER VAPOR AND ALSO SUBMERGED IN LIQUID WATER AT 1 ATM. A RELATIVELY LOW REACTION RATE BETWEEN MASSIVE BORON AND NITROGEN WAS DEMONSTRATED
