STUDY OF VARIABLE SPEED FACSIMILE SCANNING TECHNIQUES

Abstract

WORK WAS BASICALLY OF A RESEARCH NATURE, THE INTENT BEING TO STUDY VARIABLE VELOCITY FACSIMILE SYSTEMS, TO EVALUATE THEM FROM A PRACTICAL VIEWPOINT, AND TO USE THIS BACKGROUND IN ATTEMPTING TO DEVELOP A VERSATILE AND PRACTICAL SYSTEM THAT WOULD BE USEFUL (1) IN CONSERVING BANDWIDTH OR (2) IN INCREASING THE SPEED OF FACSIMILE TRANSMISSION WITHIN A GIVEN BANDWIDTH. A SUMMARY IS GIVEN OF THE WORK DONE AND GENERAL CONCLUSIONS DERIVED FROM THIS WORK. THIS SUMMARY INCLUDES (1) A DISCUSSION OF THE METHODS USED IN HOLDING THE BANDWIDTH DOWN AND DESIGNINGA SYSTEM THAT HAS CONSIDERABLE TOLERANCE TO DELAY DISTORTION: (2) A DSCRIPTION OF THE TWO SPEED BLACK AND WHITE SYSTEM FIRST BUILT, THE REASONS IT PROVED INADEQUATE AT THAT TIME AND A METHOD OF MAKING IT PRACTICAL: (3) A DESCRIPTION OF THE CHIEF CIRCUIT PROBLEMS INVOLVED INBUILDING WORKING MODELS OF THE FM CONTROLLED HALF-TONE SYSTEM THAT CAME OUT OF THIS STUDY: AND (4) A STATEMENT OF THE STATUS OF THE MODELSAT THE TERMINATION OF THE CONTRACT
