ELECTRON-BEAM WELDING

Abstract

The article describes a specialized electronbeam unit developed by the Electric Welding Institute imeni Ye. O. Paton. The unit is intended for laboratory- and production-scale welding of large parts up to 700 mm in diameter and up to 1200 mm long. The electron gun of the unit is the low-voltage (20 kv) type. It has a combined focusing system with electrostatic and (over) electromagnetic lenses and produces a beam with a current of 500 ma with a diameter in the weld plane of approximately 1 mm. The distance between the cathode of the gun and the weld plane is 120-150 mm, which was found to be the optimum for this type of gun. The gun has no deflection system for additional correction of the beam; positioning of the beam in relation to the weld is done by moving the workpiece. (Author)
