A MATHEMATICAL MODEL FOR LENGTHS AND MID-POINTS OF INVERSIONS IN CHROMOSOMES

Abstract

THE DISTRIBUTION OF LENGTHS OF INVERSIONS AND THE FIRST TWO MOMENTS OF THE DISTRIBUTION IN CHRO MOSOMES ARE OBTAINED FOR TWO MODELS. IN ADDITION, THE DISTRIBUTIONS AND MOMENT GENERATING FUNCTIONS ARE GIVEN FOR MID-POINTS OF INVERSIONS, MIDPOINTS OF INVERSIONS FOR A FIXED LENGTH OF INVERSION, PROXIMAL BREAKS, AND DISTAL BREAKS FOR ONE OF THE MODELS. BOTH LEAST SQUARE AND MAXIMUM LIKEIHOOD ESTIMATORS FOR THE PARAMETERS OF THE SECOND MODEL FOR LENGTHS OF INVERSIONS ARE PRESENTED AND EXEMPLIFIED WITH A NUMERICAL EXAMPLE. A RELATIVELY GOOD FIT WAS OBTAINED EVEN INCLUDING THE CLASS OF SHORT INVERSIONS WHICH ARE LESS THAN OR EQUAL TO 5( OF THE LENGTH OF THE CHROMOSOME. A GOOD SHARE OF POSSIBLE SHORT INVERSIONS MAY BE LOST AS DELETIONS, AND HENCE THE OBSERVED FREQUENCY IN THIS CLASS MAY BE TOO LOW
