SELF AND FOREIGN GAS BROADENING IN THE PURE ROTATION SPECTRUM OF WATER VAPOR 475 TO 690 WAVE NUMBERS

Abstract

ACCURATE EXPERIMENTAL VALUES OF THE INTEGRATED ABSORPTION COEFFICIENT WERE MEASURED FOR A NUMBER OF LINES IN THE H20PURE ROTATION SPECTRUM. THESE WERE COMBINED WITH ACCURATE EQUIVALENT WIDTH MEASUREMENTS FOR THE SAME LINES TO OBTAIN LINE HALF-WIDTHS WHICH,IN THE CASE OF SELFBROADENING, DISPLAY SIMILAR ACCURACY. THE CRITERIA OF SELF-CONSISTENCY AND QUALITATIVE AGREEMENT WITH WELL-ESTABLISHED THEORETICAL CONCEPTS WERE INVOKED TO TEST THE VALIDITY OF THESE RESULTS AND SATISFIED. THE TWO SIMPLE THESES THAT THE LINE STRENGTH IS SIGNIFICANTLY AFFECTED BY CENTRIFUGAL STRETCHING AND THAT THE LINE HALF-WIDTHS DEPEND ON THE ROTATIONAL STATE WERE AMPLY DEMONSTRATED
