EXPLORATION OF THE IONOSPHERE WITH TELEMETERING MONOCHROMATORS AND RETARDING POTENTIAL ANALYZERS

Abstract

ROCKET MEASUREMENTS OF SOLAR EXTREME ULTRAVIOLET AND X-RAY FLUXES ARE DISCUSSED AS A NEW BASIS FOR EXPERIMENTAL IONOSPHERIC RESEARCH. MUCH DETAILED COMPLEMENTARY INFORMATION CAN BE OBTAINED FROM EXPERIMENTS WITH RETARDING POTENTIAL ANALYZERS PARTICULARLY THOSE OF PARALLEL PLANE GEOMETRY. THE ANALYZER'S PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTIC CAN BE READILY USED FOR MANY DIFFERENT PROBING OBJECTIVES INCLUDING THE ANALYSIS OF HIGHLY ANISOTROPIC REGIONS OF INOSPHERES AND FORION DENSITIES AS LOW AS THAT EXPECTED FOR THE INTERPLANETARY SPACE
