ANALYSIS OF CREOSOTE BY COLUMN CHROMATOGRAPHY

Abstract

TO DESCRIVE THE CHROMATOGRAPHIC SEPARATION OF THE SATURATED HYDROCARBON FRACTIONS FROM A NUMBER OF CREOSOTES, PETROLEUM OILS, AND CREOSOTE-PETROLEUM BLENDS AND TO DESCRIBE THE TOXICITIES OF THESE CHROMATOGRAPHY FRACTIONS. RESULTS: AN EFFECTIVE METHOD OF SEPARATING SATURATED HYDROCARBONS FROM CREOSOTE AND PETROLEUM OILS WAS DEVELOPED. THE COKE OVEN CREOSOTES INVESTIGATED HAD EXTREMELY LOW SATURATED HYDROCARBON CONTENTS, WHILE CREOSOTES PRODUCED AT LOWER CARBONIZATION TEMPERATURES CONTAINED SIGNIFICANTLY GREATER AMOUNTS. THE SATURATED HYDROCARBON FRACTIONS FROM BOTH CREOSOTES AND PETROLEUM OILS WERE ALL RELATIVELY NONTOXIC TO LIMNORIA AND TEREDO
