THE EFFECTS OF ONE MEGACYCLE ULTRASONIC VIBRATION ON THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF PORTLAND CEMENT MORTAR

Abstract

ONE-HALF OF EACH OF THE ULTRASONIC AND STANDARD SPECIMENS WERE TESTED IN COMPRESSION AT 7 DAYS AGE AND THE OTHER HALF WERE TESTED AT 28 DAYS AGE. AT 7 DAYS AGE, THE ULTRASONICALLY PREPARED SPECIMENS EXHIBITED APPROXIMATELY 1380 PSI (25() LESS COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH THAN THOSE PREPARED BY STANDARD ASTM PROCEDURES. AT 28 DAYS AGE, THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH RELATIONSHIP OF THE ULTRASONIC AND STANDARD SPECIMENS WAS THE SAME BUT THE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH LOSS INCREASED TO 2180 PSI (28(). THIS LIMITED INVESTIGATION INDICATES THAT THE APPLICATION OF 1 MEGACYCLE ULTRASONIC VIBRATION TO PORTLAND CEMENT-WATER PASTE REDUCES THE ULTIMATE COMPRESSIVE STRENGTH OF MORTARS MADE WITH THIS PASTE AND THAT A VERY POWERFUL ULTRASONIC GENERATOR, NOT PRESENTLY AVAILABLE, WOULD BE REQUIRED TO AGITATE CONSTRUCTION QUANTITIES OF MORTAR AND/OR CONCRETE.
