A NEW PARALLEL TUBE CONTINUOUS HEMODIALYZER

Abstract

THE DETAILS OF DESIGN, OPERATION, AND THE RESULTS OBTAINED WITH A NEW CONTINUOUS HEMODIALYZER ARE DESCRIBED. THE ADVANTAGES INCLUDE EFFICIENT UTILIZATION OF THE AVAILABLE MEMBRANE SURFACE AREA, TRANSPARENCY, PRETESTABILITY, LOW RESISTANCE TO FLOW, AND A WIDE RANGE IN THE RATE OF ULTRAFILTRATION. THE EXTRACORPOREAL VOLUME IS, HOWEVER, DEPENDENT UPON THE OUTFLOW TRACT PRESSURE. AT LOW OUTFLOW TRACT PRESSURES, AS IS THE USUAL EXPERIMENTAL SITUATION IN VIVO, THIS EXTRACORPOREAL VOLUME IS WITHIN REASONABLE LIMITS AND IS RELATIVELY FIXED. METHYL METHACRYLATE RODS ARE CURRENTLY BEING EMPLOYED AND CARRY THE ADDITIONAL DISADVANTAGES OF EXPENSE AND THE NEED FOR CHEMICAL STERILIZATION
