SPREAD F

Abstract

The occurrence of spread F in the polor region is investigated. The traveling maximum moves along the auroral belt, whereas the permanent maximum is situated over the Canadian Archipelago and remains there during the day. The results are interpreted in relation to the magnetic field and F-layer disturbances. The analysis of ionograms leads to a new classification scheme and the definition of a pread-F index. Suggestions for improving the scaling procedures are made.
