ACETONE-FURFUROL RESINS

Abstract

The purpose of this study, is to develop the most efficient methods of synthesis of furfurolacetone resins and to determine the properties of these resins. To obtain maximum yield for the mono-compound a ratio of one mol of furfurol to six mols of acetone is used. For the di-compound the molar ratio is 1:0.5. Alkalis and some amines are considered the best condensing agents. The concentration of alkali and the composition of the reacting mixture are also important in obtaining optimum yield. Optimum yield was 9697% for difurfurylidene acetone and 70% for furfurylidene acetone. Both compounds are crystalline and can be polymerized in the presence of alkaline catalysts. (Author)
