CHEMICAL MILLING

Abstract

A process study, outlining the capabilities and limitations of chemical milling, the materials for which it is suitable, the accuracies and surface finishes expected; derived from a study of the available literature and visits to users of the process, are made to determine the applicability of the method to the pilot production requirements of Watervliet Arsenal. Forty-two pounds of 4340 steel were removed from a 90mm M41 breech ring in 61 hours by chemical milling. Surface finish was 62 micro inches. Metal removal rate was . 0007 in. per minute.
