RECOMBINATION PROCESSES IN THE IONOSPHERE

Abstract

The various loss processes operating in the ionosphere and contributing to the effective recombination coefficient are surveyed. Values of the coefficient are given for different heights under various conditions. Changes in the coefficient at night are discussed. Values determined during eclipses and during disturbed conditions such as conditions prevailing during magnetic disturbances and during solar flares are reported, and their implications are examined.
