ELECTRO-THERMAL ANALYSIS OF THERMOSETTING POLYMERS

Abstract

The thermal stability of three typical thermosetting polymers was determined by a new experimental technique. This technique, which is called Electro-Thermal Analysis (ETA), consists of determining the magnitude and temperature dependence of the electrical valume resistivity of a polymer before and after thermal degradation. Onset of degradation is evidenced by a decrease in the maximum values of the magnitude and temperature dependence of the resistivity. Complete degradation is indicated when the electrical parameters approach limiting values characteristic of the basic structure of the polymer. The ETA results are discussed in terms of the structure of the polymers considered. These results indicate that resistivity techniques are sensitive to the degradation of bulk thermosetting polymers.
