EVALUATION OF THE PROTOTYPE PRODUCTION SAMPLE CONTROL BOX MK 45 MOD 0

Abstract

The Control Box Mk 45 Mod 0 is a package containing seven Explosive Switches Mk 35 Mod 0 in an electrical network. This switch is essentiallyA ONE-SHOT IRREVERSIBLE RELAY WHICH FUNCTIONS WHEN IT RECEIVES AN ELECTRICAL IMPULSE. The electrical impulse heats a fine bridge wire, in turn initiating a pyrotechnic system. This generates a sudden gas pressure which acts against a piston. The movement of this piston causes the opening of a normally closed contact pair followed by the closure of a normally opened contact pair. Twenty prototype production evaluation samples of the Control Box Mk 45 Mod 0 were sequentially subjected to packaging, temperature and humidity cycling, vibration, and shock tests. All the tests were successfully passed with the exception of aircraft vibration. Because of the extreme severity of this test, and the fact that it followed other rigorous tests, it was decided not to disqualify the control box for its intended purpose. Recommendations are offered to improve the ruggedness of the box. (Author)
