ARRESTED FAILURE OF HARDENED STEEL

Abstract

The phenomenon of the reduced strength of hardened steel under a static load was investigated. This phenomenon is attributed to plastic deformation proceeing in single, favorablyoriented grains under stresses that are below nomal short-time trength. It was established that the development of plastic deforion in ime leads to overloading and to the fracture of the boundaries of the initial grains of austenite. (uthor)
