PRODUCTION OF SECONDARY VORTICES IN THE FIELD OF A PRIMARY VORTEX
Abstract
Conjectures based upon observations of the decay of larger vortices in shear flow, such as occur e.g. during transition in boundary layers were confirmed when a range of secondary vortices were produced by imposing divergence upon the vortex tube in two controlled experiments for steady and nonsteady flow, respectively. Secondary vortex patterns were analyzed theoretically and experimentally. These flow patterns are seen to represent a possible mechanism for the transfer of energy from primary vortices to motions of higher wave number. (Author)
