EVALUATION OF THE IMPROVED EXTERNAL CARGO-SLING SYSTEM (VERTOL SWING HOOK) ON AN H-21 AND AN H-34 HELICOPTER

Abstract

An evaluation was made of the cargo hook swing attachment for use on the H-21 and H-34 helicopters, to determine: (1) general characteristics of the system, (2) desirability of retrofit of the system on H-21 and H-34 helicopters, giving consideration to the total cost of a retrofit program, and (3) suitability of this type system for application to new helicopters, such as HU-1D and HC-1B. The improved external cargo sling system (Swing Hook) for the H-21 helicopter is a hinged, externally retractable metal yoke to which a swivel hook is attached. The improved external cargo sling system for the H-34 helicopter is an internally retractable, folding, double-axis cargo swing to which a swivel hook is attached. It was recommended that: (1) The Swing Hook be provided for retrofit purposes on H-21 helicopters, (2) No further consideration be given to the Vertol Swing Hook for the H-34 helicopter in its present configuration, (3) Investigation continue toward refinement of design for the H-34 installation, and (4) No consideration be given to the application of the Swing Hook to HU-1( ) helicopters.
