EVALUATION OF L-23F DE-ICING AND ANTI-ICING SYSTEMS

Abstract

Flight tests were made under simulated light and moderate icing conditions and under natural icing conditions to evaluate the anti-icing and lightweight de-icing systems installed on the production model L-23 F airplane. The antiicing system is essentially the same as that incorporated by the L-23D airplane, while the lightweight de-icing system weighs 80 lb as compared to 144 lb for the heavy de-icing system on the L-23D. The lightweight system is operated from a ground-serviced compressed-air accumulator which when fully charged to 3000 psi will activate the de-icing boots about 75 cycles. The lightweight system failed to remove ice 1/2 to 3/4 in. thick) from the outboard 3 ft of the wing which was successfully removed by the heavy de-icing system under similar conditions. The lightweight de-icing system was considered unsuitable for Army use on the L-23 airplanes. The anti-icing system was considered suitable for use on L-23 airplanes.
